Students in grades 9–12 from Bishop, North, South, Torrance, West, and Shery High Schools can participate in recreational and educational programs designed to build skills and foster social connections.

Programs and activities include:

THE ATTIC – A Torrance Teen Center

ATTIC Front Doors

THE ATTIC is a place for City of Torrance High School students to get away from their everyday routines, a place that is committed to their voices and needs. The center is a drop-in program for 14–18-year-olds in the City of Torrance. The students must be Torrance residents or attend a Torrance High School. THE ATTIC is a direct reflection of students' input. The programs are organized and implemented by high school students with adult supervision. Students have unique opportunities to plan and participate in special events, classes, activities, volunteer opportunities, fitness, sports, and more. We have the perfect place for you to hang out or meet up with friends. Please stop in and check it out for yourself.

  • Monday–Friday, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • CLOSED on holidays

Youth Volunteer Leadership Training Program

The City of Torrance Community Services Department is seeking responsible high students entering grades 10, 11 and 12 to participate in a Youth Volunteer Leadership Training Program sponsored by the Recreation Services Division.  The program is designed to provide the participants with job training opportunities while volunteering in various programs in the Community Services Department.

The job opportunities may consist of working with children in a park, day camp, office work, youth sports (coaching/umpiring/refereeing), seniors at a senior citizen facility, the Plunge or the Nature Center (learning about nature and environmental issues). Fee includes training, training materials, t-shirts and badge. This is an excellent opportunity to serve the community and receive 100 volunteer hours and on the job training experience.  Participants will learn how to work effectively with a variety of people and how to prepare for a job in a Community Services setting. In addition, this valuable training will provide you with the skills you need in order to apply for a part-time position within the City of Torrance Community Services Department.

IN SERVICE SUMMER TRAINING:

(This one-week training is MANDATORY)

Monday through Friday, June 17 - June 21 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

VOLUNTEER SUMMER SERVICE: 100 Hours

June 16- August 8, 2025
Between the hours of 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
3 - 5 days per week
Time and location will vary according to assignment and there may be some weekend hours.

COST: $135 residents/$150 non-residents (includes training, training material, t-shirts and badge)

If you would like to be considered for the program, complete the YOUTH VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM APPLICATION and return it to Torrance Community Services Department, Attention:  YVLTP.  Participants will be accepted into the program on a first come first served basis depending on their summer availability.  Do not send payment with your application. Youth Volunteer Leadership Applications Resident Registration begins May 20 and Non-Residents Registration begins May 27 through June 2. Volunteer spaces are limited; all others will be placed on a waiting list.

All applicants and parents MUST attend a MANDATORY meeting on Monday, June 2 at THE ATTIC (2320 West Carson St.), from 5 – 6 p.m. Participants will be notified of their acceptance into the Youth Volunteer Leadership Program at the parent meeting and payment will be due by Friday, June 6, 2025.  Refunds and credits will not be issued for this program.
