Large Item Pick Up & Illegal Dumping
Residents with City trash collection can request a free pickup of large or bulky items. Large Item Pickup is available on an on-call basis once per calendar year per address for free.
Additional Large Item collection is available at a low cost. Rates and Container Sizes page coming soon.

Large Item collections (up to 20 items), with the exception of electronics and metal appliances, are sent to the landfill and NOT recycled, so please use this option last! If your items are still usable, please consider donating or selling items.

Important Guidelines
- The City will collect up to 20 items per pick up.
- Small items must be tied in or placed in bags.
- Your pickup will be scheduled on your scheduled refuse collection day.
- Place items where recycling is picked up, at least five feet away from your trash and recycling containers.
- Items placed on private property will not be collected.
- Torrance Municipal Code states that materials cannot be placed for collection earlier than 12 hours before the scheduled pickup.
- Cancellations must be made at least one day in advance of your scheduled pickup.
Prohibited Items
- Construction Debris: Wood, concrete, bricks, drywall, wall-to-wall carpeting, dirt, tree trunks, plumbing fixtures such as water heaters, etc.
- Auto Parts: Batteries, doors, fenders, motors, gas tanks, tires, etc.
- Household Hazardous Waste: Paint, Medicine and Sharps, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, mercury-containing equipment such as thermostats and thermometers, electronic waste, etc.
- Items that Cannot Be Safely Handled by Two Persons: Spas, hot tubs, pianos, organs, etc.
Alternative Disposal Options
Wall to Wall Carpeting
Carpeting is not accepted in the City's Large Item Pick Up service. Carpeting can be recycled through CARE (Carpet America Recovery Effort). Visit CARE's website to find a drop off location near you.
Mattresses
Mattresses are accepted in the City's Large Item Pick Up service and recycled through the Mattress Recycling Council. If you have do not wish to use your large item pick up for a mattress there are a few disposal options:
Metal and Appliance Recycling

For residents who have items the City will not take, or for those who have already used the large item pick up for the year, local transfer stations(PDF, 196KB) are open to the public. Please call ahead for prices, accepted materials, recycling options or other requirements.
*NOTE: Large Item Collection is not available during the time of our Christmas tree recycling program, which usually starts after Christmas and continues for two weeks. Please call at least three weeks before the Christmas tree pick up begins to allow time to schedule the large item pick up for the year.
Report Illegal Dumping
Report illegal dumping at (855) 354-5623 or by using the myTorranceCA app. If possible, provide the time and location and license plate number of the dumper.
You can also use the myTorrance app to report a shopping cart in the public right of way.
