Students and Government Day helps Torrance 8th-grade students build a strong understanding of how local government works. When you understand how local government works, you’re more prepared to take part in your community and make informed decisions as a future voter.
During this program, students learn how the City Council and city staff work by taking part in a mock City Council meeting and exploring the basics of local self-governance. It’s a hands-on way to see how local decisions are made and to experience civic engagement in action.
The 20th annual Students and Government Day will be on May 5, 2026. The submission period for the 2026 program has closed.
2026 Essay Prompt: The City of Torrance encourages us all to be involved in our community. What long-term volunteer program would you create for 8th graders to help make our city a better place to live, work, and play?
