Students and Government Day helps Torrance 8th-grade students build a strong understanding of how local government works. When you understand how local government works, you’re more prepared to take part in your community and make informed decisions as a future voter.
During this program, students learn how the City Council and city staff work by taking part in a mock City Council meeting and exploring the basics of local self-governance. It’s a hands-on way to see how local decisions are made and to experience civic engagement in action.
The 21st annual Students and Government Day will be on Tuesday, May 4, 2027.
2027 Essay Prompt: "In June, 2026 Torrance voters elected Sharon Kalani as the new Mayor. What advice would you give Mayor Kalani to make our City the best place to live, work, and play? How can students help promote the Mayor's motto 'One Torrance, One Community’?”
Essays must be submitted by Monday, February 1, 2027. Hard copies will not be accepted.
