Published on August 26, 2026
The City of Torrance officially welcomed Linda Barnett as its newly appointed District 4 City Councilmember during Tuesday evening’s City Council meeting. The Council voted 6-0 to appoint Barnett to fill the vacancy created when former District 4 Councilmember Sharon Kalani was elected Mayor and assumed her new role on July 14, 2026. Barnett was sworn in following the vote.
Barnett was selected from among 12 applicants representing a broad range of professional, civic and community experience. The candidates were given an opportunity to present their qualifications and discuss their interest in serving District 4 before the Council took a vote.
“I am delighted to welcome Linda Barnett back to City Hall and to the City Council,” said Mayor Sharon Kalani. “Her 33 years of service to the City including 17 years as Torrance City Treasurer, extensive financial experience and longstanding commitment to Torrance will bring valuable knowledge and perspective to the dais. Linda has consistently demonstrated integrity, sound judgement, and a genuine dedication to public service. I am confident she will be a strong voice to represent District 4 and a collaborative partner as we continue to move Torrance forward together.”
A 60-year Torrance resident, Barnett was first appointed to fill a vacancy in March 1993 and was subsequently elected to the office four consecutive terms before retiring in 2010. She also served on the Torrance Federal Credit Union Board of Directors, further contributing her financial knowledge and leadership to the community.
“I am honored to be appointed to serve on the Torrance City Council,” said Councilmember Linda Barnett. “I look forward to working alongside my fellow Councilmembers and not only representing District 4 but representing all the residents of Torrance. It’s been some time since I’ve been involved, and I’m excited to be back. I love our Torrance community and am committed to the challenges before us. I look forward to working together as a team to make Torrance an even better community to live, work, and raise a family.”
District 4 is home to more than 23,000 residents and encompasses seven parks across central and southeastern Torrance, including Downtown Torrance and Wilson Park, as well as a diverse mix of neighborhoods, businesses, and schools. Councilmember Barnett will serve the remainder of the District 4 term until the results of the March 7, 2028 municipal election are certified and the newly elected Councilmember is installed.
With Barnett’s appointment, the seven-member City Council consists of Mayor Sharon Kalani, District 1 Councilmember David Kartsonis, District 2 Councilmember Bridgett Lewis, District 3 Councilmember Asam Sheikh, District 4 Councilmember Linda Barnett, District 5 Councilmember Betty Lieu, District 6 Councilmember Dr. Jeremy Gerson. Torrance’s elected body also includes City Clerk Rebecca Poirier and City Treasurer Aurelio Mattucci.
