Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

CERT, or the Community Emergency Response Team, is a group of organized and trained volunteer disaster workers, at the neighborhood level. CERT members are prepared to be self-sustaining for five days following a large disaster.

When disaster strikes, CERT volunteers spring into action: they check on neighbors, suppress small fires, conduct light urban search and rescue, and provide emergency medical aid and psychological comfort to their neighbors.

The Torrance Fire Department conducts CERT courses. If you are interested in CERT courses, please visit the CERT Registration page for the next upcoming class. For questions regarding new CERT members please contact Fire Prevention Specialist Luis Miranda at LMiranda@TorranceCA.Gov. For inquiries on CERT refreshers please contact the Office of Emergency Services at OES@TorranceCA.Gov

Business Emergency Response Team (BERT)

The Torrance Fire Department’s BERT (Business Emergency Response Team) training is an invaluable resource for businesses within the City of Torrance. This program is designed to equip businesses with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively respond to emergencies.

The training encompasses crucial aspects of disaster preparedness, ensuring that businesses can develop plans tailored to their specific needs. Additionally, participants gain hands-on experience in using fire extinguishers, a fundamental skill for mitigating small fires before they escalate.
