Keeping children safe on the road is a shared responsibility. Our Fire Department is proud to offer free child car seat safety checks to help families make sure their car seats are installed and used correctly.

Why Car Seat Checks Matter

Car seats are one of the most effective ways to protect children in a crash—but studies show many are installed or used incorrectly. A quick check by a trained professional can make a big difference in your child’s safety.

Step 1.What We Offer

  • Free car seat safety inspections

  • Checks performed by certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) technicians

  • Guidance on proper seat selection, installation, and harness use

  • Education tailored to your child’s age, height, and weight

  • Answers to your car seat and booster seat questions

Step 2.What to Expect During a Check

  • A technician will review your child’s car seat and vehicle setup

  • You’ll receive hands-on guidance and safety tips

  • The goal is to help you understand how to use your car seat safely every day

Appointments typically take 20–30 minutes per seat.

Step 3.Who Should Attend

  • Parents, guardians, and caregivers

  • Expecting parents preparing for a new arrival

  • Anyone transporting children regularly

Children are encouraged to attend so technicians can ensure the best possible fit.

Step 4.When and Where

Car seat checks will usually be done on weekdays at either:

  • Torrance Fire Station 1 or

  • Community Risk Reduction Division/Fire Prevention parking lot
