PRESS RELEASE - TORRANCE, Calif., August 18, 2026 - The City of Torrance joined internationally recognized Los Angeles-based artist Robert Vargas today for a press conference marking the start of a new large-scale mural at the DoubleTree by Hilton Torrance South Bay.

“This project reflects the City’s continued commitment to strengthening our local economy, attracting visitors, and supporting our business community,” said Torrance Mayor Sharon Kalani. “We are thrilled to welcome another masterpiece by Robert Vargas that celebrates the intersection of art and sports and reflects the very best of Torrance.”

The highly anticipated work, titled “The Storm Is Coming,” is being painted across the hotel’s north wall and will feature a dynamic depiction of Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and safety Derwin James Jr. Vargas is painting the mural entirely freehand, allowing residents and visitors to watch the artwork come to life throughout the installation.

“This mural will, I believe, turn the Hawthorne corridor into not only a sports destination, but also a cultural and artistic flashpoint,” said Vargas. “I’m so excited to be able to contribute my work, team up with the City of Torrance and the DoubleTree, and get the Chargers on board to celebrate sports and culture.”

This is Vargas’ second major work at the DoubleTree, following “Samurai of the Diamond,” unveiled March 24, 2026. That mural honors Dodgers’ stars Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki while celebrating Torrance’s Japanese American heritage and ties with Japan.

Together, the murals will transform both sides of the hotel into a sports and public art landmark along the Hawthorne Boulevard corridor, creating a vibrant destination for residents, visitors, and sports fans. The Torrance City Council approved the project unanimously at its meeting on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. The project carries no City expenditure and follows the Cultural Arts Commission’s recommendation that the project supports Torrance’s Public Arts Program.

The completed mural is scheduled to be unveiled September 8, 2026, just days before the Chargers’ home opener on September 13. To follow the mural’s progress, visit the City’s Instagram and @TheRobertVargas.
