Dr. Jeremy Gerson was elected to Torrance City Council representing District 6 on March 5, 2024. He currently serves as Chair for the Community Planning and Design Committee and is a member of the Citizen Development and Enrichment Committee and the Strategic Plan Committee.
Dr. Gerson served on the Torrance Unified School District Board of Education from December 10, 2018 to April 9, 2024, including serving as the School Board President. He was elected to the School Board in an at-large city election and ran unopposed for his second term where he became the first Board of Education Trustee elected to Trustee Area E. In that role, Dr. Gerson oversaw programs for almost 22,000 students per year, over 3600 employees, and a budget of over $300 million. He also served two terms on the California School Boards Association Delegate Assembly, an elected position, setting state-level policy and positively impacting school districts all over the State of California.
Dr. Gerson drafted the first Strategic Collaborative Agreement between the City of Torrance and the Torrance Unified School district while he was serving as School Board President. He was also appointed to the citizen panel that wrote the City of Torrance’s current Strategic Plan.
Dr. Gerson has been actively involved in community service since he was a teenager. After years of decorating rose floats, he was selected by the Torrance Rose Float Association as one of two float riders in the 1994 Rose Parade. He was recognized by the American Youth Soccer Organization’s Area F (serving all of Torrance, PV, and San Pedro) Director and Executive Board for over 20 years of service. He served as the 2017 Adult Leader for the Torrance Sister City Association where he has continued to volunteer each year since. While Dr. Jeremy Gerson has received the Parent-Teacher Association Honorary Service Award, his wife, Dr. Jennifer Gerson, has received it twice including the Continuing Service Award recognition. The Torrance/South Bay YMCA recognized the entire Gerson family for their service to the community as their 2019 Family of the Year.
Dr. Gerson earned his doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California with his independent dissertation entitled, Principal Perceptions of Educational Leader Evaluation Practices in Los Angeles County. He earned his Master of Arts in Education from Whittier College with his independent research paper entitled “Extending mathematical communication through algebra blogs” as presented at the 5th International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His Bachelor of Arts in Psychology was also earned at Whittier College.
Dr. Gerson became a resident of Torrance in July 1986. He graduated from Torrance High School in 1992 and chosen as a Tartar Student of the Month in May of the same year. He became a Torrance Teacher in August 2003 and resigned that position to serve as a Torrance School Board Member in December 2018. Dr. Gerson and his wife have two children attending Torrance Unified schools.
