Excellence in Arts Nomination

Help recognize individuals, organizations, and businesses that have made meaningful contributions to arts and culture in the South Bay. Before submitting a nomination, please review the award categories, eligibility requirements, and nomination criteria below. 

Before submitting a nomination: 

  • Nominees must be 18 years or older
  • Nominees must live or work in the South Bay. Businesses and organizations whose main office and operations occur within the South Bay may be nominated. It is suggested that the nominated organizations be composed of at least 50% South Bay residents. 
  • Nominee consent is required before submission
  • Current Cultural Arts Commissioners and their immediate family members are not eligible

Award Categories

Dance

Nominees may be dancers, choreographers, or dance instructors.

Drama & Theatre Arts

Nominees may be actors or other creative professionals such as directors; “behind the scenes” practitioners such as costumers are also eligible.

Music

Nominees may be musicians, composers, vocalists, or music instructors.

Visual Arts & Design

Nominees may be artists utilizing any medium, including but not limited to painting, photography, sculpture, or computer-generated.

Literary Arts

Nominees may be poets, writers of fiction, non-fiction, plays, essays or history. 

Dr. Tom Rische Arts Education

Nominees may be instructors in any arts discipline, at any level.

Emerging Artist

Nominees may be from any category, and will possess skills commensurate with someone in the beginning stages of a professional career and will be able to articulate a clear set of career goals. 

Katy Geissert Award

The Katy Geissert Award recognizes outstanding support for all the arts in the South Bay. The Geissert award is open to anyone who contributes to the arts in the South Bay regardless of their residence. Eligible awardees might include philanthropic individuals, outstanding organizations, corporations, or other institutions – or innovators who have had an impact. They may be selected for their contributions to the arts in programmatic, artistic, organizational, volunteer, advocacy, funding and any other area that provides substantial and recognizable support for the arts in the South Bay. 

 

Nomination Criteria

Nominees are reviewed based on the following qualifications: 

  • Recognition in the field by their peers
  • Quality of Work
  • Services to the South Bay community through the arts

Full Program Guidelines

Purpose

The Excellence in Arts Awards recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations in the South Bay that have demonstrated excellence in advancing the arts and enriching the community through creative achievement, education, advocacy, or support.

Award Categories

Awards may be presented in the following categories:

  • Dance
  • Drama & Theatre Arts
  • Music
  • Visual Arts & Design
  • Literary Arts
  • Dr. Tom Rische Arts Education Award
  • Emerging Artist
  • Katy Geissert Award

The Cultural Arts Commission determines award recipients and categories annually at its discretion.

Nomination Process

Any South Bay resident, business, or organization may submit a nomination in any award category. All nominations must be submitted in writing, and nominees must consent to the nomination before submission.

Eligibility

Individuals who live or work in the South Bay and are 18 years or older may be nominated. South Bay-based businesses and organizations are also eligible for nomination. Organizations are encouraged to include at least 50% South Bay residents.

Current Cultural Arts Commissioners and their immediate family members are not eligible.

Selection Process

The Excellence in Arts Committee reviews all nominations and makes recommendations to the Cultural Arts Commission. Final award recipients are approved during a regular Commission meeting.

Award Presentation

Awards are presented annually by the Cultural Arts Commission during a reception held each October in recognition of National Arts and Humanities Month.
