Tracy Drake

I became the Park Services Manager after being the Manager and Naturalist of the Madrona Marsh Preserve and Nature Center since January 2002. I am passionate about my job and particularly enjoy the people with whom I work.  The City is very fortunate that Staff in Park Services is very knowledgeable about many park maintenance practices and work hard to keep the parks in the best shape possible for visitors. Together, as a division, we are looking forward to making the parks more beautiful by adding small planted areas, improving paths and playgrounds and improving infrastructure. These goals are achievable and will take time, but we are committed to continued improvement.

As the Manager and Naturalist at Madrona, I tried on a daily basis to move Staff, volunteers and the Preserve towards potential. With this philosophy as an organization we were able to move steadily forward and accomplish many goals related to restoration, programming, education, and leadership training. I carry this same philosophy into the Park Services Manager position and look forward to achieving specific goals we are setting for each park.

Before coming to Torrance I graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a degree in Recreation.  I earned a Master’s degree in Outdoor Resource Management with an emphasis on Environmental Education from Indiana University.  While in school, both graduate and undergraduate, I studied leadership principles and continue this study today.  Many times while driving, I am listening to audio books on leadership.

Highlights in my career have included serving as an instructor and within a few years becoming a Principal at one of Orange County’s seven outdoor science schools located in the San Bernardino Mountains, working as a nature interpreter for California State Parks Mojave Desert Sector and running my own fine-gardening business.

I was elected to a post on the 2005 Board of Directors of the Palos Verdes/South Bay Audubon Society where I am still an active member. I’m also a member of the National Association of (nature and cultural) Interpreters, and have received several awards of excellence from local organizations as well as from the City of Torrance.

In my core through, I am a teacher of nature – all aspects. I love life and love to share its beauty with others.
