Home MenuHometown Heroes Military Banner Recognition Program
The 2026 application period is now open. The application period for 2026 will close Jan. 22, 2026.
The Hometown Heroes Military Banner Recognition Program recognizes those members of our community who are currently serving in the Armed Forces, veterans who have served in the past, or veterans of the past who are now deceased.
Banners typically are displayed from May-July in these general areas:
- Torrance Boulevard
- Carson Street
- Madrona Avenue
- Fashion Way
New banners get priority along Torrance Boulevard in their first year. After the first year, location for older banners is random.
Locations for the displaying of Hometown Heroes banners will be determined by the City of Torrance and a specific location is not guaranteed. Available space is determined on a first-come, first serve-basis. Visibility of the banners is a priority in determining locations.
If you have questions about the program, please email Veterans@TorranceCA.Gov.
Eligibility information:
- Honorees must be military personnel who are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces; veterans who have served in the past; or veterans of the past who are deceased.
- Military personnel must be Torrance residents or an immediate family member (spouse, parent, step-parent, child or sibling) of a Torrance resident.
- Residency requirement can be waived if military personnel is a graduate of a high school in Torrance.
When getting ready to submit an application, please have the following documentation (to be submitted only during an open application period):
- Proof of Torrance residency (utility bill, etc.) or proof of graduation from a Torrance high school (diploma or transcript)
- Proof of military service

Damaged banners may be removed at the discretion of the City of Torrance without notice.
City staff and the vendor monitor banners throughout the banner installation period, but occasionally banners become loose due to wind or wear and tear. If you see a loose banner or find a banner that has fallen, please email Veterans@TorranceCA.Gov and it will be addressed as soon as possible. The public's assistance with alerting us to these is appreciated.
