Message from Torrance Police Chief Berg

Post Date:05/31/2020 3:10 PM

Dear Torrance Community,

We, at the Torrance Police Department,  are incredibly disturbed and saddened by the death of George Floyd in Minnesota.  The actions of the officers are deplorable and violate the public trust we have worked so hard to build within the Torrance Community.

Much of our policing is based on the fundamental concept of maintaining a partnership that is focused on Community Based Policing.  We train to de-escalate a situation whenever possible, and to only use the amount of force necessary to perform our duties.  We will not tolerate in our ranks anyone who does not live up to these standards.

In response to the civil unrest occurring throughout our Nation and California, the Torrance Police Department has been monitoring the events in Downtown LA, Fairfax District, Beverly Hills and throughout the Westside of LA. We support and uphold the First Amendment right on freedom of speech and to peacefully assemble and to protest. However, we do not condone the illegal activities of rioting, looting, physically harming others, and the destruction of property.

Please know that we have sufficient staffing and specific plans in place to keep the Torrance community safe during times like these that we are currently experiencing.

I am proud of our officers and department employees and their commitment to partnering with you to provide professional public safety and service.

Eve R. Berg
Chief of Police
