City Manager Appoints Craig Bilezerian as Public Works Director

Craig BilezerianTORRANCE, Calif., July 22, 2019 – With pleasure, Torrance City Manager LeRoy J. Jackson appointed Craig Bilezerian to the position of Public Works Director effective July 21, 2019.

Craig was hired by the City of Torrance in 2000 as an Engineering Manager with the Public Works Department.  He was promoted to Deputy Public Works Director/City Engineer in 2013, and has served as the Interim Public Works Director since May 2019 after the departure of his predecessor, Robert Beste.  Throughout his tenure, Craig has demonstrated a professional commitment towards career development within the City of Torrance.  His duties included management of infrastructure improvement, street maintenance, Airport runways and taxiways, Streetscape, Sanitation, Storm Water System, Traffic Signal/Street Lighting, and the Municipal Water System.

Previously, Craig served as chair of the City’s Airport Noise Hearing Board and currently attends meetings of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments and METRO to represent Torrance for various transportation and other funding programs. 

City Manager, LeRoy J. Jackson said, “Craig has provided sound oversight of the department’s operating budget and is proficient in developing policy updates and enforcing mandated regulations.  He is a skillful problem-solver and conducts thorough and well received public presentations at Traffic and Water Commission and City Council meetings.”

Craig received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts in 1992 and has been a registered Civil Engineer with the State of California since 1996.  He has been actively involved with the Torrance training team and the implementation of setting and upholding the City’s core values.

Craig was selected from a competitive group of candidates due to his extensive knowledge of all divisions of the Public Works operations and his clear understanding of this leadership role.  Mayor Patrick J Furey applauded Bilezerian’s continued commitment and vision for departmental growth.  “Craig’s background knowledge of the City and forward-thinking will prove to be advantageous to the City.”
