WATERMAIN DAMAGE AT EDISON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Torrance, Calif., January 17, 2019 – The City of Torrance and Torrance Unified School District combined efforts to maintain normal operations following a damaged watermain at Edison Elementary School.

Torrance Public Works Water Operations crew responded at 8:30 a.m. on January 16th due to a damaged watermain.

Initially it was estimated to be resolved at a minimum of 2-hours; however, at 10 a.m. it was discovered that the damage was more extensive than originally anticipated and the outage would most likely last the rest of the day.  Water Operations crew temporarily provided the school water by connecting a hose from a fire hydrant directly to the schools plumbing system.  This connection kept the cafeteria area with water during the day in an effort to limit school and student disruption.   Water Operations also provided 20 cases of bottled water for the school to use as necessary.  TUSD provided portable restrooms.

Water Operations continued working on repairs into the night and early morning hours, with service being restored this morning at 5:30 a.m.

Water Operations is maintaining contact with the school principal in case anything else is needed.  Crews are now backfilling the trench to make the area safe for travel.  Roadway conditions are expected to return to normal this afternoon, and the sidewalk secure for safe passage by the time school lets out today.
