Description: Surface of the moon, 1969, Iron Curtain, Nazis, aerospace, Stalin. What do all these things have in common? Robert Frimtzis.

Frimtzis was a teenager during WWII when Josef Stalin was persecuting citizens of Europe. He escaped to start a trek to to America and his dream of aerospace. Imagine a teenager, crossing from Moldova to Romania to Hungary, then Austria, and finally reaching Italy (crossing the Alps twice by foot) to eventually reach America at the age of 19.

He received his degrees (Bachelors/CCNY and Masters/Columbia) in electrical engineering without finishing high school. Robert used this knowledge to contributed to the successes of America's space and defense programs.

Distinguishing himself in the field of simulator design for airliners, Frimtzis applied his skill and creativity to the field of space exploration, eventually making major contributions to the NASA moon landing program. The author of “From Tajikistan to the Moon”, Frimtzis will share his experiences.

Description: Leadership Torrance 2011 is hosting a Virtual and Real Food Drive. Sponsored by the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Torrance is a community organization that focuses on the development of effective leaders from across Torrance by building community connections. It provides opportunities for emerging leaders to take an active role towards building a stronger community.

Each year a class project is created by Leadership Torrance that supports the community. The 2011 class chose a Virtual and Real Food Drive to benefit Torrance residents in need.

Giving food and donations during the Fall and Winter holiday seasons are commonplace and traditional. But what about the rest of the year when those in need and the hungry still need assistance.

We encourage you to give money via this Virtual Food Drive website where for every $1 raised, 5 pounds of food can be purchased and the Food bank is able to acquire and distribute food for 4 meals.

Donations will be distributed to Torrance families through St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church.

Thank you for your contribution!
