For decades, this daughter of one of the wealthiest families in America was searching for direction in her life. In 1912, she found it with the publication of her first book of poetry. From that moment on, she was determined to cut away the influence of English Victorianism on the nation’s literary landscape and plant it with a modern, wholly American style.
