Saturday, May 18, 2013 | 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Torrance Airport (3315 Airport Drive, Red Baron #3)
Come celebrate Armed Forces Weekend with the Western Museum of Flight's (WMoF) Celebrity Speaker Series featuring Dan Delane often considered "the" Eagle Driver. The F-15 Eagle, a McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter, was considered among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 aerial combat victories with no losses in dogfights and Delane was right there in the mix. The Air Force was charged with the responsibility to guarantee that the United States and our allies, i. e., Israel, Japan, Saudi Arabia, etc., would absolutely rule the skies over any field of conflict. The Eagle was first flown in July 1972 as a fast, agile, and versatile fighter then activated into service in 1976. Its powerful engines enabled it to climb to altitude in a hurry, respond instantly to the pilots' throttle movements, and to fly and fight at supersonic speeds. Its radar could find and identify threat targets quickly and accurately, and provide that data to the aircraft's weapons computer, which could instantly command any of the wide variety of weapons the pilot chose to employ. The Eagle required the best of the best pilots and we are fortunate to have one of those best of the best - Dan Delane - who is willing to describe for us some of the skills needed to command the Eagle, and some of the thrills experienced by the privileged few who had the opportunity to do so. Also WMoF will have a Warbird display during the lecture. You'll be up close and personal with the Skytrooper, Valiant, Texan, Expeditor and Mustang. As always, WMoF Members are free; non-members are $5, which also includes access to WMoF museum exhibits. Free parking. Enjoy the Celebrity Series? Why not support the WMoF with an annual membership (wmof.com/newmem.htm). The annual membership gives you one-year unlimited FREE admission to the WMoF museum, all the Celebrity Series Lectures, Quarterly Newsletters, access to the research library and access to Special Events.

Monday, May 27, 2013 | 2:00 PM - 2:45 PM
Memorial Plaza at the corner of Torrance Blvd. & Maple Ave.,
The Torrance Historical Society will conduct a memorial service for Torrance service personnel who gave their lives in U. S. military actions. The program will include the reading of the 146 Names on the Wall. Those Names include war losses from World War I to those in the Iraq and Afghanistan War. With the help of a handful of volunteers, the Torrance Historical Society is continuing to gather and preserve the too-short life story of each of the Torrance military war causalities. To date, the organization is halfway to their goal of putting a face on each name. Immediately following the Memorial Service, all are invited to the Torrance Historical Society & Museum (1345 Post Ave., Old Torrance) for the first public viewing of Dennis Kwong’s 23-minute Names on the Wall documentary, which captures the research behind the Names on the Wall project.
