Pride, sorrow, love, and passion are universal themes that transcend cultural boundaries. Through its purity of form, rhythms, and intensity, flamenco strikes primal chords in the emotions of audiences of all ages, all cultures, and all degrees of exposure to the arts. Flamenco is considered worldwide to be one of the riches expressions of folklore. It is inherently a multicultural art form. Originally from Andalusia, the southern region of Spain, it developed from the interaction of the many cultures that inhibited this region for centuries. Traditional dances include the joyful Alegrias, with songs that are light and carefree in spirit; the Tango, one of the oldest and most basic gypsy forms; and the Soleres, the essence and root of flamenco with its themes of romantic tragedy, desolation and death. The flamenco party frequently ends por Bulerias, with a “jam session” in which the performers take turns to “show their stuff.”

A thoroughly Italian work, this Puccini gem tells the love story of a kept woman from high society and a naïve younger man of moderate means. From the composer’s fabled Act I aria, “Chi il bel sogno,” to the glorious Act II café scene, the production features two world-renowned singers at their best; Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu and Russian tenor Misha Didyk. Ion Marin conducts La Rondine in an opulent Art Deco productions design by Nicolas Joel. (Sung in Italian; English subtitles; 2 hours.)

Russia’s finest young string players founded the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin in 1991. They have earned international recognition as one of Russia’s leading ensembles playing their countrymen’s compositions. At the Armstrong their program will include Prokofiev’s Visions Fugitives and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. Under the creative baton of its founder and music director Misha Rachlevsky, Chamber Orchestra Kremlin’s warmth and high energy create addictive performances that stay with listeners long after the last note has been played.
