Saturday, August 17, 2013 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Torrance Airport (3315 Airport Drive, Red Baron #3)
Join us, for a story that has hitherto been known only to a privileged few. LtCol Bill “Flaps” Flanagan will tell us the story of one such effort - the cloaking of one of the most mysterious aircraft ever employed in the world of clandestine aviation. Flanagan, Lieutenant Colonel (USAF retired), is a former SR-71 pilot. The SR-71, i.e., the Blackbird, was not just a plane but was faster than a speeding bullet and still is considered the Cold War spy plane designed to fly higher and fast beyond danger. The Blackbird regularly flew missions at speeds beyond 2,000 mph (Mach 3) and could survey more than 100,000 square miles of the Earth's surface per hour from a height of 80,000 feet (15 miles). The SR-71 shattered speed and altitude records for manned air-breathing jet aircraft. Flanagan was also a B2 Bomber pilot and is Chairman of the Flight Test Historical Foundation. As the RSO (reconnaissance systems officer) Flaps Flanagan lived in the in the shadowy world giving him insights into the technologies, the dangers, the intrigues, and the fascinating revelations of the secret world of spying from on-high. Interestingly, one of the most interesting aspects of this special world is the extraordinary efforts expended to conceal the very existence of some of the aircraft used to accomplish these vital missions. As always, WMoF Members are free; non-members are $5, which also includes access to WMoF museum exhibits. Free parking.
