The City of Torrance Community Services Department invites participants aged 5-9 to come join the fun at the Mini Kids Club at El Retiro Park! Children will have the opportunity to participate in structured activities such as crafts, cooking and games. The fee for Mini Kids Club is $50 for residents and $55 a session for non-residents. Mini Kids Club operates June 23-August 28, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., in 2 week sessions, Mondays and Wednesdays and Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This 4 day program begins, Tuesday, August 5th and continues until August 8th from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. will integrate science and art to gain a deeper understanding of these fascinating creatures. The students will explore the preserve and gain a understanding of biological adoptions that helps these animals survive in the wild. Additionally students will learn to illustrate these creatures to develop observational skills and to gain a appreciation for the beauty of nature. Ages 10-21. $30 to attend all 4 classes. Please join CSUDH professor Connie Vadheim for entertaining and educational classes on various native plant topics. This class occurs on the 1st Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and repeats the following Tuesday of every month from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Every month is a different topic - never the same class twice. Topics range from 'edible seeds and berries' to 'Chaparral Communities and pruning techniques'. This month's topic will be Hummingbird Heaven: designing an elegant, water-wise Hummingbird garden. After each presentation Connie will lead the class through the Nature Center's Native Plant Garden to illustrate key points and inspire further discussion. Handouts are included. Staff will help children ages 6-14 create a variety of wood craft projects. Parents/guardians must be present in order for the child to participate. Sessions are limited to 20 children per session and are offered on a first come first served basis. Registration will be taken 10 minutes prior to the start of each session. Join the Propagation Society and Linda Gonzales as we plant seeds for the future of the Madrona Marsh Preserve. Learn how to: prepare soil for planting on the marsh, grow native plants for restoration and fund raising events at the Madrona Marsh, 'pot up' plants to larger containers, collect and 'clean' seeds and prune native plants in the nursery. This program occurs every Thursday of every month from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. This program is best for adults and college age students. Ages 21+. Free! "Friday Fun" is a hands-on program for pre-schoolers, ages 3-6 years and their parents or guardians. This program will be offered at no charge every Friday of every month from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., but a $5 donation is requested. Best to register on Tuesday for that week's Friday Fun Program. The program will incorporate story time, science, art and a tour emphasizing the chosen topic. Some weeks there will also be potting and other activities. The topics emphasize respect for all living things and prepare the children (and parents) to be good stewards of the planet. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 20 children. Beautiful bugs, birds and mammals are all around us. This 4 day program begins Tuesday, August 5th and continues thru Friday, August 8th from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. will integrate science and art to gain a deeper understanding of these fascinating creatures. The students will explore the preserve and gain a understanding of biological adoptions that helps these animals survive in the wild. Additionally students will learn to illustrate these creatures to develop observational skills and to gain a appreciation for the beauty of nature. Ages 10-21. $30 to attend all 4 classes. MAS Attack 6 (Mutual Appreciation Society) is a one-night-only appreciation for artist's artists - to facilitate networking and friendships, to introduce art lovers to new works and gallerists to new talent, like a giant 'studio visit'.
