The City of Torrance Community Services Department invites participants aged 5-9 to come join the fun at the Mini Kids Club at El Retiro Park! Children will have the opportunity to participate in structured activities such as crafts, cooking and games. The fee for Mini Kids Club is $50 for residents and $55 a session for non-residents. Mini Kids Club operates June 23-August 28, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., in 2 week sessions, Mondays and Wednesdays and Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The After School Club Program is geared towards youth in elementary and middle schools. This recreation program is designed to promote self-esteem through group interaction and self-expression. The program offers games, sports, music, group discussions, guest speakers and a wide variety of activities. Structured time is set aside for homework each day. This is not a tutorial based program. This program is based on a ratio of one staff member per ten youth at Elementary School and one staff member per thirteen youth at Middle Schools. Enrollment is limited at all schools. All participants must be a student at the school for which they are registering and also must be picked up by an adult, age 18 or older. Resident walk-in registration begins August 19, 2014. 2014. Bird identification can be puzzling but we can help make it easier for you. In this class you will learn how to use fieldmarks and bird vocalization for proper identification of birds. The program is orientated towards youth between the ages of 9-25 only! This program will occur on August 19, 20, 21 and 22 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. By the end of the program, you will be able to identify some of our local birds with a single glance or a single "chirp". Strongly recommend that you attend all 4 classes. Binoculars will be provided. Free! Donations are greatly appreciated. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Join us for the Art in Nature Workshop, occurring on Wednesday, August 20, and Saturday, August 23, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Wednesday's workshop will be an art demonstration followed by a inspiring stroll on the Madrona Marsh Preserve. On Saturday, join Suzanne Gibson for a 2 hour plein air workshop on the Preserve, painting the wonders of nature. All art supplies will be provided with the option of purchasing your own kit. The program will be offered at no charge every Friday of every month from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., but a $5 donation is requested. Best to register on Tuesday for that week's Friday Fun Program. The program will incorporate story time, science, art and a tour emphasizing the chosen topic. Some weeks there will be potting and other activities. The topics emphasize respect for all living things and prepare the children (and parents) to be good stewards of the planet. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 20 children. Bird identification can be puzzling but we can help make it easier for you. In this class you will learn how to use fieldmarks and bird vocalization for proper identification of birds. The program is orientated towards youth between the ages of 9-25 only! This program will occur on August 19, 20, 21 and 22 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. By the end of the program, you will be able to identify some of our local birds with a single glance or a single "chirp".
