Put on your tennies and join the Torrance Historical Society for a Walking Tour of historic Old Torrance. It's FREE, FUN, and FULL of history! There is not time like the present to learn about the past - especially in Torrance. This docent-led tour begins at the Torrance Historical Museum, and will point out the historic landmarks of Downtown Torrance. You will also learn how the City and some of the streets in Downtown got their name, where the first public library originated, the original boundaries of the City, where Buffy the Vampire Slayer was filmed and more. The tour is an easy, but brisk walk covering eight blocks. It's open to the public, requires no reservations, and is hosted on the fourth Sunday of every month, May - October. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Bring your camera, and a friend!

The City of Torrance in partnership with the Torrance Historical Society, Torrance Unified School District, Torrance Airport Association, Torrance High School, and the Torrance High School Alumni Association, would like to invite the community to a memorial in honor of Torrance hometown hero, Louis Zamperini who passed away on July 2nd 2014. The memorial, open to the public is planned for 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 31 at Torrance High School's Zamperini Stadium (2125 Lincoln Ave.), Zamperini's alma mater. High heel shoes are not permitted on the field, PLEASE WEAR FLAT SHOES. Public parking is available at SoCal ROC (2300 Crenshaw Blvd.). Join us to celebrate the life of Louis Zamperini with airplane flyovers, reflections from Zamperini’s family and friends, and a symbolic lap around the track. The program will be offered at no charge every Friday of every month from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., but a $5 donation is requested. Best to register on Tuesday for that week's Friday Fun Program. The program will incorporate story time, science, art and a tour emphasizing the chosen topic. Some weeks there will be potting and other activities. The topics emphasize respect for all living things and prepare the children (and parents) to be good stewards of the planet. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 20 children. Join us for our Habitat Restoration Program every Saturday of every month from 8:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on the Madrona Marsh Preserve planting natives, weeding, propagating or maybe watering new plants. Wear closed toe shoes, bring gloves and be ready to work. Refreshments are provided. Rain or a holiday that fall on a Saturday cancels this program. Be on time - late comers will not be able to work. Please join CSUDH professor Connie Vadheim for entertaining and educational classes on various native plant topics. This class occurs on the 1st Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and repeats the following Tuesday of every month from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Every month is a different topic - never the same class twice. Topics range from 'edible seeds and berries' to 'Chaparral Communities and pruning techniques'. This month's topic will be Hummingbird Heaven: designing an elegant, water-wise Hummingbird garden. After each presentation Connie will lead the class through the Nature Center's Native Plant Garden to illustrate key points and inspire further discussion. Handouts are included. "Evening Under the Stars" celebrates the best in South Bay cuisine while raising funds for local charity. The 2014 Evening Under the Stars Gourmet Food & Wine Festival will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014, at 6:00pm on the grounds of American Honda in Torrance. This year's event will feature multi-GRAMMY Award winners Tia Carrere and Daniel Ho with hula performances by Keali'i Ceballos and Halau. This annual event, created by American Honda Motor Co., Inc., and co-presented with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, brings the South Bay Community together with local businesses and civic leaders to benefit the community. The 2014 beneficiary is Torrance Memorial Medical Center and additional selected charities.
