The Torrance Historical Society will host a reading of the holiday classic - ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Children of all ages and adults who are young at heart, are invited to this free event. Looking dapper with his waxed handlebar moustache, silk lounging jacket and spats, Michael George, guest historian, will cozy down in an antique wingback chair and delight listeners with this magical tale. At the sound of sleigh bells ringing, Santa will pay a visit. One lucky winner will be selected to receive their very own copy of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. There will also be an opportunity drawing for Beanie Babies, and each guest in attendance will depart with a treat (compliments of COSTCO). Reservations are not required.

The program offers games, sports, music, group discussions, guest speakers and a wide variety of activities. Structured time is set aside for homework each day. This is not a tutorial based program. This program is based on a ratio of one staff member per ten youth at Elementary School and one staff member per thirteen youth at Middle Schools. Enrollment is limited at all schools. All participants must be a student at the school for which they are registering and also must be picked up by an adult, age 18 or older. Resident walk-in registration begins August 19, 2013. Non-resident walk-in registration begins August 26, 2013. Learn how to: prepare soil for planting on the marsh, grow native plants for restoration and fund raising events at the Madrona Marsh, 'pot up' plants to larger containers, collect and 'clean' seeds and prune native plants in the nursery. The City of Torrance Community Services Department invites participants ages 6-11 to spend Winter Break at Greenwood Park participating in indoor crafts, outdoor games, and walking field trips Monday, December 30, 2013, Thursday, January 2, 2014, 2010 and Friday, January 3, 2014 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fees for Winter Fun Camp are $78 for residents and $88 for non-residents. Camp t-shirts are $7 and must be worn on field trips. TEEN CAMP: Think you are too cool for camp? "Friday Fun" is a hands-on program for pre-schoolers, ages 3-6 years and their parents or guardians. This program will be offered at no charge every Friday of every month from 10:00 a.m. - 12 noon but a $5 donation is requested. Best to register on Tuesday for that week's Friday Fun program. The program will incorporate story time, science, art and a tour emphasizing the chosen topic. Some weeks there will also be potting and other activities. The topics emphasize respect for all living things and prepare the children (and parents) to be good stewards of the planet. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 20 children. The After School Club Program is geared towards youth in elementary and middle schools. This recreation program is designed to promote self-esteem through group interaction and self-expression. The program offers games, sports, music, group discussions, guest speakers and a wide variety of activities. Structured time is set aside for homework each day. This is not a tutorial based program. This program is based on a ratio of one staff member per ten youth at Elementary School and one staff member per thirteen youth at Middle Schools. Enrollment is limited at all schools. All participants must be a student at the school for which they are registering and also must be picked up by an adult, age 18 or older. Resident walk-in registration begins August 19, 2013. Non-resident walk-in registration begins August 26, 2013. A beginner's guide to birds, bird-life and behavior. Each class will include a short presentation about the featured birds, followed by a walk on the Preserve to look for them. This month's program will be Nationwide Birding - history and the importance of the Christmas bird count. The Christmas Bird Count is the longest running Citizen Science survey in the world! During the holiday season it has become a tradition for nature lovers to go out in the field and document beautiful local birds. Join us for the 114th CBC and help us survey the local bird population. In order to attend the all day Christmas bird count on the 22nd, you must attend this class and learn how to identify different species and the proper methods of surveying an area. $5 per person. Join us for our habitat restoration program every Saturday of the month of every month from 8:45 a.m. - 12 noon on the Madrona Marsh Preserve planting natives, weeding, propagating or maybe watering new plants. Wear closed toe shoes, bring gloves and be ready to work. Refreshments are provided. Rain or a holiday that fall on a Saturday cancels this program. Be on time - late comers will not be able to work.
