Topics range from 'edible seeds and berries' to 'Chaparral Communities and pruning techniques'. This month's topic will be on beautiful butterflies: food and habitat for our prettiest pollinators. After each presentation Connie will lead the class through the Nature Center's Native Plant Garden to illustrate key points and inspire further discussion. Handouts are included. A 22-year veteran who flew F-4 C, D, E, and Slated Wing E models, SR-71A model and the SR-71B model, Lt. Col., (retired) Maury Rosenberg can pretty much give you the insiderís touch of flying in the evolution of flying from the late 60ís to 1987. A pilot that was the 2nd pilot to accumulate over 1,000 hours in the SR-71 and became the pilot with the most operational hours in the SR-71. A pilot who avoided a North Korean SAM-2 missile fired at his plane in 1981 to be with us on July 19th. The California native was focused on the skies during his Northrop University days before receiving a BS in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering followed by a Master in Science in Systems Management Engineering from USC. After the USAF he became a captain for United Airlines. Rosenberg was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in 1965 and promptly selected for the F-4 Phantom transition school and completed training December 1966. He served 11 months in Vietnam flying 220 combat sorties, 69 of which were over North Vietnam then onto a 3-year tour at Yokota AB Japan. Maury served 30 month tour at Nellis AFB as a Wild Weasel instructor pilot and completed and graduated from the Air Forceís Fighter Weapons School. While there Captain Rosenberg served as an instructor in both the Fighter Weapons School, and Wild Weasel School and flew flight test and evaluation in the 22nd Operational Test & Evaluation Squadron. Rosenberg was selected for the SR-71 program serving two tours before being promoted to Lt. Col. as Operation Officer for the SR-71 1st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron. All this experience led to Director of Reconnaissance 15th Air Force in July 1984 (awarded 15th Air Force Reconnaissance Pilot of the Year) before retiring from active duty (1987). Put on your tennies and join the Torrance Historical Society for a Walking Tour of historic Old Torrance. It's FREE, FUN, and FULL of history! There is not time like the present to learn about the past - especially in Torrance. This docent-led tour begins at the Torrance Historical Museum, and will point out the historic landmarks of Downtown Torrance. You will also learn how the City and some of the streets in Downtown got their name, where the first public library originated, the original boundaries of the City, where Buffy the Vampire Slayer was filmed and more. The tour is an easy, but brisk walk covering eight blocks. It's open to the public, requires no reservations, and is hosted on the fourth Sunday of every month, May - October. The City of Torrance in partnership with the Torrance Historical Society, Torrance Unified School District, Torrance Airport Association, Torrance High School, and the Torrance High School Alumni Association, would like to invite the community to a memorial in honor of Torrance hometown hero, Louis Zamperini who passed away on July 2nd 2014. The memorial, open to the public is planned for 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 31 at Torrance High School's Zamperini Stadium (2125 Lincoln Ave.), Zamperini's alma mater. High heel shoes are not permitted on the field, PLEASE WEAR FLAT SHOES. Public parking is available at SoCal ROC (2300 Crenshaw Blvd.). Join us to celebrate the life of Louis Zamperini with airplane flyovers, reflections from Zamperiniís family and friends, and a symbolic lap around the track.
