In Voices from the Canefields author Franklin Odo presents over two hundred Japanese folk songs, in translation, in historical context. Folk songs are narrative songs that use traditional melodies and are written in a style that involves the traditional culture. Some, like Mexican corridos or Scottish ballads, reworked in the Appalachias, are stories of heroic episodes. Others, like the African American blues, reach from a difficult present back into slavery and forward into a troubled future. Japanese workers in Hawaii's plantations created their own versions. Dr. Franklin S. Odo is a Japanese American author, scholar, activist, and historian. Dr. Odo has served as the director of the Asian Pacific American Program at the Smithsonian Institution and was the only Asian Pacific American curator at the National Museum of American History.

Elvis himself would have done a double take if he had seen Travis LeDoyt’s appearance as the King. There is simply no way to describe LeDoyt’s performance except “unbelievable.” Flawlessly capturing the essence of Elvis in his prime, LeDoyt restricts his shows to the hits and ambience of 1954 – 1960. Utilizing an authentic three-piece Nashville band featuring bass, guitar, and drums, LeDoyt takes his audience back to a genuine 1950s concert. For those who missed an Elvis concert then, this is a chance to feel what it would be like to experience the King live.

Torrance Art Museum 3320 Civic Center Drive, Torrance
The SUR:biennial ventures to turn the world upside down. "SUR" which means "south" in Spanish, designates both a geographical region - all of the featured artists have some relation to the cultures of Latin America - and something of an underdog stance. In this sense "SUR" suggests at least two things bubbling up from below, influences from the geographic south and the emergence of something new.
