Walk-in registration for Torrance Residents begins August 19, 2013. The After School Club Program is geared towards youth in elementary and middle schools. This recreation program is designed to promote self-esteem through group interaction and self-expression. The program offers games, sports, music, group discussions, guest speakers and a wide variety of activities. Structured time is set aside for homework each day. This is not a tutorial based program. This program is based on a ratio of one staff member per ten youth at Elementary School and one staff member per thirteen youth at Middle Schools. Enrollment is limited at all schools. All participants must be a student at the school for which they are registering and also must be picked up by an adult, age 18 or older. Volunteers are needed for habitat restoration every Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Join the group and gain expertise about weeds of the South Bay. The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour, presented by Rite Aid, will be in Torrance providing free skin cancer screenings on Aug. 21st. Screenings are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Educational materials that explain how to perform monthly skin checks at home and the proper ways to practice sun protection are provided to Tour participants, along with sunscreen samples and other giveaways. The screenings will be conducted by local dermatologists who have donated their time and services to the Foundation. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US, with more than 3.5 million cases diagnosed annually. The goal of the Tour is to save lives by detecting skin cancers early on and educating the public about skin cancer prevention by means of sun protection and the need for prompt, effective treatment. The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour, presented by Rite Aid, receives additional support from Energizer Personal Care – the makers of Banana Boat® and Hawaiian Tropic® brand sunscreens – Leo Pharma Inc., LLumar Window Films® and BASF Corporation.
