Torrance Airport (3315 Airport Drive, Red Baron #3)
One of country’s highly effective and highly successful endeavors was Space Shuttle Program. The retirement of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011 has forced NASA to change direction in its programs to launch satellites and cargos into space. This change has accelerated the rate of commercialization of many of the nation’s activities in space. Bob Sackheim, assistant center director/chief engineer at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (Huntsville, Ala.), will discuss his views on the current trends in rocket propulsion, the evolving commercial launch vehicle industry, and the growth of commercial space base services. A former South Bay resident, Sackheim had a long and interesting career both at TRW and NASA. He was presented the recipient of the Presidential Rank Award, one of the highest honors in government service. In the 1980s, he wrote the book-in fact, the entire curriculum-on spacecraft design for UCLA continuing to teach aerospace engineering classes today at the University of Alabama. He has authored more than 150 technical papers and contributed to four books on rocket propulsion. He holds eight patents in spacecraft propulsion and control systems technologies. At 28 years of age, Sackheim was the project manager for Mariner's Mars Propulsion Subsystem. Sackheim led development and flight-testing of Gemini propulsion systems, preparing to send America's second wave of astronauts into space. Sackheim is only its third Marshall Center employee in the 40-plus-year history to be elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering. As always, WMoF Members are free; non-members are $5, which also includes access to WMoF museum exhibits. Free parking. Enjoy the Celebrity Series?
