George Nakano Theatre [Torrance Cultural Arts Center] 3330 Civic Center Drive
Michelangelo Merisi o Amerighi da Caravaggio was a realistic painter who lived in the late 1500s. Born in Milan, he traveled to Rome to become a painter at a young age. He worked under influential painters of the day and secured a reputation for his own style. But Caravaggio was as famous for his street brawls as he was his art and he ended up in jail frequently. Brilliant but troubled, he died under suspicious circumstances in 1610 at the age of 39. This lecture will follow the evolving style of this most colorful artist as he comments on politics through his artwork. Caravaggio had the ability to express in one painting a vivid moment in time with all the drama of an entire scene.
