    <description>Date: Sat, Jun 16, 2012
Time: 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Description: On Saturday, June 16th (11AM) the Western Museum of Flight (WMoF) and CMIT Solutions of Torrance presents Harald Bauer, teenage test pilot for both Germany and the United States.

In the world of test pilots, where remarkable stories are commonplace, any story that manages to rise above its peers must be something really special.

The words “really special” describe Commander Harold P. Bauer USN (Ret), the only pilot in the world still alive that served in both the World War II Luftwaffe and the U.S. military.

During World War II he flew for the Luftwaffe. Born in Berlin, young Bauer was recruited when the German forces were experiencing extreme manpower shortages.

Commencing flight training at age sixteen, he was quickly pressed into service as a test pilot at the Heinkel works, flying the HE-62 jet fighter.

Out of the 65 HE-162 pilots in his group, only five were left when Bauer took off on his last flight. All were lost not in combat, but in routine test and acceptance flying.

Since he was a dual citizen of the U. S. and Germany (his mother was American), he joined the US Navy. Finishing an impressive career as a Navy pilot (Korean War), CDR Bauer was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Kentucky to study journalism. He worked for both Associated Press and United Press International, from which he retired as vice president/news. Switching from the page to the big screen, Bauer worked for United International Pictures and still sits on the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation board of directors.

As always, WMOF Members are free; non-members are $5, which also includes access to WMOF museum exhibits. Free parking. BTW, a WMoF membership (www.wmof.com/newmem.htm) can be yours for as little as $50 annually giving you one-year unlimited FREE admission to the WMoF museum, all the Celebrity Series Lectures, Quarterly Newsletters, access to the research library and access to Special Events.
