Join the Propagation Society and Linda Gonzales as we plant seeds for the future of the Preserve. Learn how to: prepare soil for planting on the Marsh, grow native plants for restoration and fund raising events at the Madrona Marsh, 'pot up' plants to larger containers, collect and 'clean' seeds and prune native plants in the nursery. This "Basics" workshop offers an instructional class. There is no prerequisite for this workshop. You will learn how to develop a pleasing and water-conserving "Ocean Friendly Garden". Refreshments will be provided. Please arrive by 8:30 a.m. Space is limited, so register early.

Starting June 1, 2012, 50 person limit for this program. You must register to attend. You may register on Saturdays at 12 noon or you may register by calling the Nature Center at; (310)782-3989. If you plan to attend with a group each person must individually sign up. If you no show after you have signed up, you may not sign up again for 2 weeks. Join us for our restoration program every Saturday from 8:45 a.m. - 12 noon on the Preserve planting natives, weeding, propagating or maybe watering new plants. Wear closed toe shoes, bring gloves and be ready to work. Refreshments are provided. Rain cancels this program. Late comers will be sent away. If you are 15 years or younger you must be accompnied by a parent or guardian.

Come and learn ways to reduce and recycle yard waste by composting, “grasscycling,” worm composting, and water-wise gardening at Torrance’s permanent composting and water-wise gardening demonstration site at Columbia Park. It is operated in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. The Beginning Workshop teaches backyard composting, worm composting, grass recycling, water-wise gardening, and fire-wise gardening.

Dr. Connie Vadheim (CSU Dominguez Hills) will discuss the uses of California native plants in the vegetable garden as part of the gardening series "Out of the Wilds and into Your Garden". Featured will be native plants that provide food, color and attract beneficial insects to the edibles garden. Classes include a walk in the Madrona Native Plant Gardens, where students can see the featured plants. Saturday, June 2nd 10:00-noon; repeats Tuesday June 5th, 6:30-8:00 p.m. Madrona Marsh Nature Center, 3201 Plaza Del Amo, Torrance (310-782-3989). This is the only series that has featured native plants for western L.A. for the past 7 years - and it's FREE!
