Some weeks there will also be potting or other activities added. One of Europe's most distinguished string quartets, Cuarteto Casals has earned extensive critical acclaim and won top prizes at many international competitions, including first place at the 2000 London and 2002 Johannes Brahms International string quartet competitions. In 2006, the Spanish ensemble received the National Music Award - the highest distinction for musicians in Spain - and in 2008 was awarded the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in England. In addition, the quartet has accompanied the King and Queen of Spain on official state visits as well as performed at the Palacio Real in Madrid using the royal family's collection of Stradivarius instruments.

Come and learn ways to reduce and recycle yard waste by composting, "grasscycling," worm composting, and water-wise gardening at Torrance's permanent composting and water-wise gardening demonstration site at Columbia Park. It is operated in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. The Beginning Workshop teaches backyard composting, worm composting, grass recycling, water-wise gardening, and fire-wise gardening. The Advanced Workshop teaches organic gardening, the art and science of good soil, environmentally responsible ways to control pests, conserving water around the garden, and using native and drought-tolerant plants.

The Western Museum of Flight (WMoF) continues its Celebrity Lecture Series with the History of Soaring presented by Dr. Gary Fogel. Author Dr. Gary Fogel chronicles the “firsts” of soaring in the San Diego area, including flights made by Charles Lindbergh, William Hawley, John Robinson (first three-time National Soaring Champion; first in the world to fly over 30,000 feet in a sailplane; first American to fly over 300 miles cross-country) and many more. Fogel’s paperback, Wind and Wings: The History of Soaring in San Diego, is a fascinating documentary, with historical accuracy, accompanied by original photographs of the historic gliders. Fogel will take the excitement from the Gliderport to the podium in this WMoF Celebrity Series Lecture.
