Sunday, October 7, 2012 | 2:00 PM
James Armstrong Theatre [Torrance Cultural Arts Center] 3330 Civic Center Drive
Considered scandalous a century ago, this adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s play has not lost its ability to shock. Set in Biblical times, the erotically charged opera centers on a tangled triangle: the persecuted John the Baptist, a lecherous King Herod and his pathologically seductive stepdaughter, Salome. Soprano Nadja Michael is mesmerizing in the title role opposite bass-baritone Greer Grimsley (Jokanaan) and tenor Kim Bogley (Herod). Music Director Nicola Luisotti conducts “with flair and muscle.” (San Francisco Chronicle). “All the zesty blood lust of a good vampire movie…bravely and marvelously macabre!” New York Times One hour 53 minutes with one intermission.

Torrance Historical Society & Museum, 1345 Post Avenue, Torrance
Torrance Historical Society’s biannual Home Tour in Old Torrance will focus on past favorite homes as well as one built in 1912, the year that Torrance was founded. It is the Society’s largest fundraiser and gives guests a glimpse of the past by introducing them to the original homes and architectural style in Torrance. This event has been a tradition since 1980 and will celebrate 100 years of Torrance living through highlighting how others have renovated, updated and decorated their historic homes to accommodate today’s lifestyle, yet managed to preserve the charming architecture and characteristics of the past.
