The program will incorporate story time, science, art and a tour emphasizing the chosen topic. Some weeks there will be potting and other activities. A 22-year veteran who flew F-4 C, D, E, and Slated Wing E models, SR-71A model and the SR-71B model, Lt. Col., (retired) Maury Rosenberg can pretty much give you the insiderís touch of flying in the evolution of flying from the late 60ís to 1987. A pilot that was the 2nd pilot to accumulate over 1,000 hours in the SR-71 and became the pilot with the most operational hours in the SR-71. A pilot who avoided a North Korean SAM-2 missile fired at his plane in 1981 to be with us on July 19th. The California native was focused on the skies during his Northrop University days before receiving a BS in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering followed by a Master in Science in Systems Management Engineering from USC. After the USAF he became a captain for United Airlines. Rosenberg was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in 1965 and promptly selected for the F-4 Phantom transition school and completed training December 1966. He served 11 months in Vietnam flying 220 combat sorties, 69 of which were over North Vietnam then onto a 3-year tour at Yokota AB Japan. Maury served 30 month tour at Nellis AFB as a Wild Weasel instructor pilot and completed and graduated from the Air Forceís Fighter Weapons School. While there Captain Rosenberg served as an instructor in both the Fighter Weapons School, and Wild Weasel School and flew flight test and evaluation in the 22nd Operational Test & Evaluation Squadron. Rosenberg was selected for the SR-71 program serving two tours before being promoted to Lt. Col. as Operation Officer for the SR-71 1st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron. All this experience led to Director of Reconnaissance 15th Air Force in July 1984 (awarded 15th Air Force Reconnaissance Pilot of the Year) before retiring from active duty (1987). Kids will explore aviation past, present and future; learn about flight, engineering, space as well as build beautiful scale models with experts and more. Also included is free admission to the Western Museum of Flight museum is free. Model planes are $12 to $14 depending on your choice. This event is presented by Pacific Coast Hobbies. The staff of Pacific Coast Hobbies will be on hand to assist with model building and answer technical questions. You can build as many models as you like.
