Madrona Marsh Nature Center and Preserve, 3201 Plaza Del Amo, Torrance
Join Cindy Reid every 4th Tuesday & Wednesday of the month of every month from 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. for a hands-on science nature class. Emphasis will be placed on caring for the natural world and being good stewards of the planet. Topic: Tiny Water Life. The 1st hour will be in the lab for science including live animals or plants and microscope use. The 2nd hour will be out on the Madrona Marsh Preserve to search for the things we just studied. You will need to register starting on the first of that month. Only 12 children may attend each class. We will do our best to be fair. A wait list up to 4 children will be added in case of cancellations. The participating children must be signed-in and dropped off for the first hour; parents may watch quietly in the back of the classroom. No younger siblings will be allowed in the classroom, but they are welcome to join us for the marsh walk. Ages 7-9 years. A $5 donation per student is appreciated. In the series of classes students will create a nature journal of their own drawings and field notes while studying the diversity and design of nature at the Madrona Marsh Preserve. TOPIC: microscopic life and their kin: drawing under a microscope with a look at the work of Robert Hooke; zoom in zoom out - students will make observations in 3 scales ranging from small details to habitat. Participants will learn the fundamentals of observational drawing used by the Renaissance masters. This series will include drawing, painting, calligraphy, scientific observation and questioning. Teaching is through demonstration, viewing historical masterworks, class discussion, and individual assistance, All lessons align with California State's Common Core curriculum guidelines. Open to adults and children (3rd grade and up) $20 per student per class, plus an annual $20 material fee. Four Thursday of each month. Pre-registration is required. "Friday Fun" is a hands-on program for pre-schoolers, ages 3-6 years and their parents or guardians. The program will incorporate story time, science, art and a tour emphasizing the chosen topic. Some weeks there will be potting and other activities. The topics emphasize respect for all living things and prepare the children (and parents) to be good stewards of the planet. Space is limited to 20 children. Free. Donations are greatly appreciated. Pre-registration is required. Join us for our Habitat Restoration program every Saturday of every month from 8:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on the Madrona Marsh Preserve planting natives, weeding, propagating or maybe watering new plants. No court ordered participants. Wear closed toe shoes, bring gloves and be ready to work. Refreshments are provided. Rain or a holiday that fall on a Saturday cancels this program. Be on time - late comers will not be able to work. If you are 13 years or younger you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
