Saturday, September 21, 2013 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Torrance Airport (3315 Airport Drive, Red Baron #3)
In the realm of military aviation, there isn’t much that Commander Robert A. Johnson, USN (ret), hasn’t done. Whether it’s flying reconnaissance missions deep into some of the most hostile skies on Earth, flying experimental aircraft that are not yet proven safe for lesser pilots, developing some of the most sophisticated, (and secret), strategic aircraft in the world, or commanding other pilots in performing these tasks, this month’s speaker knows what it’s all about. From the A-3D Skyraider, to the RA-5C Vigilante, to a host of other operational and experimental aircraft, CDR JOHNSON has flown, tested, and fought, in a lot of airplanes, culminating his impressive career as director of the US Navy Test Pilot school. Oh, yes, and, as if that weren’t enough, he followed up his Navy career with a second career, filling senior corporate positions at McDonnell Douglas and Northrop Grumman. There is a lot to hear, and the program promises to be both stimulating and informative. Please join us, for a very special encounter with a really exceptional individual. As always, WMoF Members are free; non-members are $5, which also includes access to WMoF museum exhibits. Free parking. Support YOUR community’s unique museum and place in history: Why not support the WMoF with an annual membership (wmof.com/newmem.htm). The annual membership – individual, family, business - gives you one-year unlimited FREE admission

Katy Geissert Civic Center Library, Community Meeting Room, 3301 Torrance Blvd
Meet Victor Silverman and Laurie Glover authors of California: On-the-Road Histories - A witty, expansive narrative that reveals the real story of the people and places that make up the Golden State. From the European conquest to today's ecomonic crisis, Californians have experienced tumultuous growth and painful conflicts. Like the grinding of tectonic plates that has produced the state's very landscape, these encounters, disputes, and transformations have continuously made and remade California. California: On-the-Road History doesn't relate the cleaned-up tale of the California dream that school textbooks and the tourism commission tell. Rather it presents the sometimes bitter, sometimes triumphant history behind the California myth. Included are recommended museums, state parks, and other attractions, alongside literary experts from local authros who give readers a sense of California in different eras.
