Are your children curious? Have they ever wondered how or why something is the way it is? In desperation, you do a quick search on the internet, only to find an answer that even you don’t understand. Science doesn’t have to be confusing or scary…it’s actually fun. In this lively, interactive performance, you can introduce your kids to the magic of science. They will not only be entertained but they will also learn something (shhh, don’t tell them)…and so might you. Come early or stay late and take part in an exciting science project provided by Exxon Mobil volunteers.

With a Light-than-Air license tucked under his wing, and having earned his Private Pilot's license at the Torrance Airport, he spent nearly four decades hovering above the Southland watching such events as the Olympics, World Cup Soccer, World Series, Super Bowls, Rose Bowls and Rose Parades -- all with the best seat in the house. On Sunday, January 19, John Crayton will share is memories of events, adventures and the transformation of the Southland's landscape from open fields to industrial complexes in a program entitled, "The Blimp - 37 Goodyears of Flying." South Bay author, Alex Moreno Areyan, will kick off the 2014 Torrance Historical Society Speakers' Series. His latest book, Beach Mexican, chronicles his journey of assimilation while growing up Mexican American in white, upper-middle class Redondo Beach during the 1950s. The book presents a story of assimilation different from that experienced by Mexican American in larger and more traditional Mexican American barrios in Southern California. Beach Mexican proves the journey was not easy. Mr. Areyan has authored two other books: Mexican Americans in Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach, and Mexican Americans in Los Angeles. Mr. Areyan will also introduce Alice Duarte Solis, a life-long resident of Torrance, who grew up in the City's Pueblo (or "La Rana") district, and is currently writing a book on the history of that community.
