Saturday, December 17, 2011 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Western Museum of Flight, 3315 Airport Dr., Torrance
A two-fer event! Almost nightly the network news has a story of the U. S. military using unmanned drones in Iraq and Afghanistan. New technology? Hardly. Ryan Aeronautical was selected to deploy unmanned aircraft; drones, to gather intelligence and, if needed, to provide protection to manned aircraft … in the 60’s and 70’s. This segment of the Celebrity Series brings nearly a half century of “new” technology to the WMoF. Featured speaker Barry Tyson presents a lecture on the Ryan family of drones and the missions performed, many years before the Predator and Global Hawk. The history pulls back the covers on US intelligence gathering in an era of the U-2 downing of Gary Powers, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the 6-day war in the Mideast and, above all, the Viet Nam war with looming threats from China and North Korea. In addition to this special lecture, we are privileged to host the presentation of the FAA Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award to long-time museum patron, Ralph Martin. This prestigious award is presented to Ralph for 50 years of safe flying as well as his other contributions to aviation. Please join us for this presentation immediately following the lecture. Refreshments will be served. Please join us. As always, WMOF Members are free; non-members are $5, which also includes access to WMOF museum exhibits. Free parking.
