Saturday, August 20, 2016 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Torrance Airport (3315 Airport Drive, Torrance, 90505)
Off the books, Skunkworks, Black Ops. All names meant a special, top-notch mission. That was Lockheed’s SR-71 Blackbird. A plane that flew at 90,000 feet, not the normal 45,000. A plane that required new oxygen masks and pressurized suits at that level. If an emergency ejection was needed it would be at Mach 3.2. Now you have a chance to hear firsthand from an elite pilot who flew one of these unique planes. Only 32 Blackbirds were built, and 12 were lost in accidents but none in action. Join us Saturday, Aug. 20 at 11 a..m. when Col. Jim Shelton (ret.), one of a handful of Blackbird pilots, will give you the background for this plane, as well as others. Col. Shelton started fast and kept getting faster. When the F-86 Sabre was the hottest rod in the fleet, Shelton flew it. He was one of the men chosen to intimidate any aggressor, flying the B-47 strategic bomber. He warmed up on the F-102, then he got faster in a phenomenally fast B-58 Hustler. Then the Blackbird. As they say, if you heard the Blackbird, it is already gone. The lecture will be followed by Easy Build Model Session, great for kids. Parking is free. Be a part of the WMoF family. Think about individual, family or business membership. Membership gives you one-year unlimited free admission to celebrity lectures, plus the quarterly newsletter, access to the research library (includes membership card) and access to special events. Members also will be listed in annual publications. Support your community’s unique museum and place in history.

James Armstrong Theatre [Torrance Cultural Arts Center] 3330 Civic Center Drive
This ‘show within a show’ combines the acclaim for the American musical during the Jazz Age, as The Man in Chair listens to a recording of a fictional 1928 musical comedy. The characters magically appear in the man’s dingy apartment, acting out the entire play. Pay attention to the action and discover how the show, and the show within a show, ends.
