Torrance Airport (3315 Airport Drive, Torrance, 90505)
When Lew Alcindor, i.e, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was set to start for UCLA basketball, coach Bob Boyd at crosstown rival USC needed to prepare his team for the 7-foot, 2-inch center. During practice, Boyd taped yardsticks to the defending team. Well, the Western Museum of Flight’s (WMoF) July speaker was like those defenders, but on a more critical mission. Capt. Tom Morgenfeld (ret.) worked on a classified project to evaluate Soviet performance characteristics and flew Soviet captured aircraft. This was after the Navy fighter pilot flew 90 missions then went on to be an F/A18 test pilot. Along the way Morgenfeld obtained a master's degree in aeronautical engineering and attended the prestigious Empire Test Pilot's school in England, being awarded the McKenna Trophy (Top Graduate.) Then Tom transferred from the Navy to the Naval Reserve, joined the Lockheed test flight organization flying the F-117, the YF-22, and all three models of the F-35. As chief test pilot for most of them, Tom eventually rose to the positions of Chief Test Pilot for the Skunk Works, and ultimately, Director of Flight Operations. Morgenfeld received many coveted awards and honors in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the advancement of the technology, including the Aerospace Walk of Honor, the Golden Eagles, and the Iven C. Kincheloe award for excellence in flight testing. Tom is now chairman of the board of trustees at the National Test Pilot School. Come hear Tom Morgenfeld talk to us about the famous Lockheed programs in which he served, and to share some his experiences from his long and illustrious career. Parking is free. Be a part of the WMoF family. Think about individual, family or business membership. Membership gives you one-year unlimited free admission to celebrity lectures, plus the quarterly newsletter, access to the research library (includes membership card) and access to special events. Members also will be listed in annual publications. Support your community’s unique museum and place in history.
