“From the first note, Mandy Harvey tames her audience into stunned appreciation as she glides pitch-perfect from breathy jazz standard to growling blues… At show’s end, the audience is on its feet. Some know the secret. Harvey has not heard any of it – not the applause, not the talent of the musicians who shared the stage, not her own incredible voice.” – Los Angeles Times. Mandy Harvey is a deaf American jazz singer and songwriter. A Vocal Music Education major at Colorado State University, Mandy lost her residual hearing, due to a neurological disorder, in 2006 – 2007 at age 18 and left the program. She pursued several career options, including education, but returned to music in 2008. She quickly became a regular performer at Jay’s Bistro in Fort Collins and then branched out to having regular concerts at Dazzle Jazz Lounge in Denver (Top 100 Jazz venues in the world).

The Heart of Japan, “Yamato,” to be ONE. Coming together as one does not mean to fit a mold and hide individuality. Maximize and embrace individuality, and let those come together to make a balance as one; that is the true meaning of “Yamato Gokoro" (the heart of Yamato). Genesis of Yamato is a dance show that embodies Japanese ancestry, scholars, myths, tails, literature such as “Genji Monogatari (the tail of Genji)”, and expands these art forms beyond letters or words to express a world of spirituality. The elegance and grace of Japanese culture comes to life through the theatrics of the choreography which features Japanese music, Japanese instruments, and kimono. The show will have a variety of styles such as ballet, contemporary, hip hop, and traditional dance to bring out the individuality and personality of the multi-race cast. This “Yamato Gokoro” will embody not only a Japanese heart, but the heart of the world.

Hailing from Chicago’s South Side, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a group of seven brothers who came from an extraordinary musical family. The band freely mix the brass band tradition with generous doses of hip hop, soul, and funk, creating an intoxicating and boisterous blend that is just barely contained on their newest release, Fly: The Customs Prelude. They have toured throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and South America and played with everyone from Prince, Mos Def, Mick Jones (The Clash) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz). They’ve performed at Coachella, WOMAD AU, ‘Jazz at Lincoln Center’, the Sydney Opera House, and Carnegie Hall. Their song, “War” was featured in the blockbuster hit movie, The Hunger Games.

You can be one of the first to witness a new play by Alison Minami at this staged reading directed by Michael Hagiwara. Set in Havana at the dawn of the Cuban Revolution, Face to the Sun is a lyrical, language-driven, play with a multicultural cast. Haunted by memories of his homeland and fearful of another war-driven imprisonment by the Cuban government, Hamada, an upstanding leader of the Japanese Cuban community, decides to uproot his family and return to Japan. But his daughter Flora is running with a guerrilla and Isabel, his Cuban wife, is no longer attracted to him. Each of them must make a choice about love and loyalty to both country and family.
