Community Blood Drive Your parent is going in for open-heart surgery, will there be enough blood? Your child has been in an accident and needs blood; does the hospital have the right type? Our nation's blood supply is sustained entirely by voluntary donations, yet fewer than 5% of Americans eligible to give blood do so each year. In the gift of blood . . . there is the absence of tangible immediate rewards in monetary or non-monetary forms; the absence of penalties, financial or otherwise, and the knowledge among donors that their donations are for unnamed strangers without distinctions of age, sex, medical condition, income, class, religion, or ethnic group.... The generosity displayed by blood donors, like other virtues, is learned over time. We acquire virtues first by acting, just as we do in the case of acquiring crafts...for example, by building we become builders. Take the first step to spur one another on to love and good deeds...stop by and give the gift of life that will stay in our community at Torrance First Baptist Church (tfbclife.org)/Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center (www.providence.org) Blood Drive, Sunday, February 10, 8:30 am - 2:30 pm, in the gym at 2118 W. Carson Street, Torrance. Call (310) 328-5030 for appointment…walk-ins welcomed!

Laugh non-stop as Robert Dubac ransacks his brain to answer the age-old question, “What do women want?” All while drinking a beer. Dubac has crafted a hysterical one-man multi-character show that tackles the battle of the sexes with precision and wit. With a shrug of his shoulders or a crook of his neck, Robert Dubac seamlessly transforms himself into five alter egos – each offering his own brand of misguided advice on how to straddle the gender gap. Hailed by critics and audiences alike, this show is a rare thing: a clever combination of theater and stand-up comedy that is laugh-out-loud funny, provocative, and insightful all at once. Two types of people should rush out to see this – men and women!

Western Museum of Flight (WMoF) Celebrity Series: Endeavour in LA; thank Kenneth Phillips Los Angeles, home to Endeavor, was one of the dozen cites vying for one of the four available retired space shuttles. Seattle and Chicago were so disappointed they asked for Congressional investigation. So how did LA get the Endeavor? Dr. Kenneth Phillips, curator for Aerospace Science at the California Science Center, was the one who headed the SoCal efforts. Dr. Phillips used his bureaucratic skills, professional knowledge, and boundless energy, to gain the preeminent position for the Center to obtain the rights to Endeavour. Ken, a longtime friend of the Western Museum of Flight, he has agreed to share with us, the history of the Space Shuttle program, as well as his personal experiences involved with the bureaucratic and financial struggle to acquire one for the people of Southern California. Join us, as Ken shares some inside information about the bureaucracy that controls these national assets. It promises to be a fascinating glimpse into a technological and political world that is usually obscured from the American public. As always, WMoF Members are free; non-members are $5, which also includes access to WMoF museum exhibits. Free parking. BTW, a WMoF membership (wmof.com/newmem.htm) can be yours for as little as $50 annually giving you one-year unlimited FREE admission to the WMoF museum, all the Celebrity Series Lectures, Quarterly Newsletters, access to the research library and access to Special Events.

"At What Cost? The Unintended Consequences of Declining Revenues" (Registration opens at 8:30 a.m.) Since the recession began a few years ago, government at all levels has had to watch their revenues decline while expenses continued. One of the consequences has been that the federal and state governments have taken action to balance their budgets by cutting revenues to local governments. The cities and county are literally where the rubber meets the road and there is no other entity that they can go to for additional revenue. Their budgets have to be in balance. Expert speakers, panelists & moderators include: * Girish Lakshman, Vice President, Amazon * Fred Silva, Senior Policy Advisor, California Forward * Bobbi Peckham, Partner, Peckham & McKenney * Jane H. Adams, Executive Director, California Park & Recreation Society * Stephen Finnegan, Manager Government Affairs, Automobile Club of Southern California * Ed Medrano, Gardena Police Chief and President of the LA County Police Chiefs’ Association * Steve Burrell, Former Hermosa Beach City Manager * David Brodsly, Managing Director, KNN Public Finance * Larry Kosmont, President and CEO, Kosmont Companies * Richard Bernard, Senior Vice President, Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates * And state and federal legislators who have been invited between 8:45 and 9:45 am RSVP’s required before February 19, 2013 Register online: www.southbaycities.org
