Western Museum of Flight, 3315 Airport Dr., Torrance
"The keeper of the flame." That term certainly describes todays Western Museum of Flight's (WMoF) Celebrity Speaker Charles Lobb. Lobb, an Air Force officer, engineer, pilot, and aerospace history authority, has compiled a wealth of historical data about our airport, our city, and our industry. Zamperini Field, aka Torrance Municipal Airport (TMA), aka Lomita Flight Strip has an illustrious history and nobody knows that history better than our own Chuck Lobb. Few know the strategic as well as historical importance played by our airport was its wartime service as the training field for the P-38 Lightning pilots. Californians were panic stricken by the Pearl Harbor attack. Civilian flights within 200 miles of the coast were immediately terminated. Airfields were commandeered; new ones hastily built. One of these was the Lomita Flight Strip, i.e., TMA. Many of the pilots who went on to help win WWII honed their craft right here in Torrance. Six Torrance-trained pilots became generals, two became commandants of cadets at the Air Force Academy, and one became the only fighter pilot with combat victories in both WWII and Vietnam. He wrote the book ... literally. Lobb, who is an adviser to Southern California Historical Aviation Foundation Board of Trustees, authored the acclaimed book, "Torrance Airport." Be sure to arrive early. WMoF will have the thrill of witnessing the arrival of an actual, flying P-38 Lightning. This is an event you won’t want to miss! As always, WMOF Members are free; non-members are $5, which also includes access to WMOF museum exhibits. Free parking. BTW, a WMoF membership (www.wmof.com/newmem.htm) can be yours for as little as $50 annually giving you one-year unlimited FREE admission to the WMoF museum, all the Celebrity Series Lectures, Quarterly Newsletters, access to the research library and access to Special Events.

Kapoho: Memoir of a Modern Pompeii by Frances Kakugawa is a collection of short memoir vignettes. Author Kakugawa is currently a Sacramento resident of Japanese descent, born in Hawai‘i. Just 5 years old at the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, her memory and recall of details provides deep insight into not only the suspicions cast upon the Japanese-American community, but life in Kapoho, the small village on the Big Island of Hawai‘i where she grew up. In the opening chapter, Kakugawa notes an eerie echo of the wartime burning of Japanese families’ heirlooms when volcanic eruptions bury the town of Kapoho beneath lava 14 years later.

Capitol Steps plan to bring down the house…and Senate with their unique blend of music and political comedy. They have performed for five U.S. Presidents, traveled to all 50 states, and if their wish comes true tomorrow, Donald Trump would be elected President. This performance can proudly claim to be the only place in America where you will find the two candidates running for President onstage singing show tunes. Founded by Congressional staffers, the group is currently celebrating its 30th year while having recorded 32 albums. If this performance influences your decision for whom to vote for President…yikes, we’re in worse shape than we thought. Not for the faint of heart nor for those considering a run for office.
