The Western Museum of Flight (WMoF) will once again hold its FREE Warbird Ramp Review on the middle day of the Torrance Armed Forces Exhibits and Parade weekend. Each year the Torrance Armed Forces Day salutes one of the five United States military segments. What other year could be better fitted for the WMoF than the U.S. Air Force. From its beginnings as the U.S. Army Air Corps, through its heroic performance as the Army Air Force, to its modern incarnation as the United States Air Force, this proud service has become a mainstay of America’s national defense. This year’s Armed Forces Day parade will focus special attention on the proud heritage of the USAF. Come join us Saturday morning, May 20 at 11 a.m. as the pilots and planes, i.e., Warbirds, stage for fly overs of the Torrance Armed Forces Parade. Meet the pilots. Take pictures of the pilots and planes. Gain that extra special bit of history those who only go to the parade and exhibits miss. Join the WMoF, the City of Torrance and the parade pilots as we honor our nation’s veterans.

Now, both 96 years young, Mel & Muriel Engelman, have quite a story to tell having both served in WWII. Mel served as a Marine in the Pacific Theatre, while Muriel served as an Army nurse behind the front lines at the Battle of the Bulge. A 1st Lieutenant, ANC, Muriel was a staff member of the 16th General Hospital, Liège, Belgium, 1944 to 1945, and was awarded the European Theatre Medal with three Battle Stars and the Belgian Fourragère. The 16th General Hospital was under experiment by the U.S. War Department to place a general hospital with a triage system in tents as close to the fighting lines as possible. The hospital was ravaged by buzz bombs, each carrying 2000 pounds of explosives, which fell every 12-15 minutes, 24 hours a day, for 2 1/2 months, destroying hospital tents and inflicting heavy casualties. On Christmas Eve, Germans strafed and bombed the hospital, killing and wounding scores of patients and staff. The enemy had surrounded Bastogne. As they approached Liège, nurses were told to be ready to move out within minutes and expect capture by the Germans. Muriel wore dog tags with an H for Hebrew. Muriel will share her experiences, maps and diagrams during this presentation. Her book, Mission Accomplished: Stop The Clock, will be available for purchase ($20 - cash or check) and signing after the event.

Guests will also learn . . . • What's in the cornerstone of the original Jared Sidney Torrance Memorial Hospital • Why Downtown was laid-out in a "Y" fashion • About the explosion that helped put Torrance on the map • What TV character "lived" on Cota • About the oldest church building in still in continuous use The tour will also include information regarding the world renown landscape architectural firm of Olmsted & Sons, John C., and Frederick Law, Jr. of Brookline MA, who designed the City of Torrance. Plus, attendees learn how the City and some of the streets in Downtown got their name, where the first public library originated, the original boundaries of the City, where Buffy the Vampire Slayer was filmed and more. The tour is an easy, but brisk walk covering eight blocks -- comfortable walking shoes are recommended. It's free, open to the public, requires no reservations, and is hosted on the fourth Sunday of every month, May - October.
