Walk-in registration for Torrance Residents begins August 19, 2013. The After School Club Program is geared towards youth in elementary and middle schools. This recreation program is designed to promote self-esteem through group interaction and self-expression. The program offers games, sports, music, group discussions, guest speakers and a wide variety of activities. Structured time is set aside for homework each day. This is not a tutorial based program. This program is based on a ratio of one staff member per ten youth at Elementary School and one staff member per thirteen youth at Middle Schools. Enrollment is limited at all schools. All participants must be a student at the school for which they are registering and also must be picked up by an adult, age 18 or older. Come join the fun at the Mini Kids Club! Children will have the opportunity to participate in structured activities such as crafts, cooking and games. Participants must bring a lunch and wear closed toe shoes. A daily snack is provided. Enrollment will be limited to 20 participants per session. The fee for Mini Kids Club is $50 for residents and $55 a session for non-residents. A $10 late fee will be charged for every 10 minutes parents are late in picking up their child. Please join CSUDH professor Connie Vadheim for entertaining and educational classes on various native plant topics. This class occurs on the 1st Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. - 12 noon and repeats the following 1st Tuesday of every month from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Every month is a different topic - never the same class twice. Topics range from 'edible seeds and berries' to 'Chaparral Communities and pruning techniques'. This month's topic is natives on the edge: native plants that can survive near the lawn. After each presentation, Connie will lead the class through the Nature Center's Native Plant Garden to illustrate key points and further discussion. Handouts are included.
