Saturday, November 17, 2012 | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Torrance Airport, 3315 Airport Dr., Torrance
On the "one month to the day (Nov. 17th)", the world will remember the 109th anniversary (Dec. 17th) of the Wright Brothers' first ever fixed-wing powered flight. Or was it the FIRST? There is still much controversy about the Wright Brothers' claim but there is no question about who first designed, built, and flew a heavier-than-air craft. That honor goes to California born John Joseph Montgomery and his scientifically-designed flying machines were demonstrating human flight more than twenty years before more celebrated events at Kitty Hawk. Launching from cliffs (1884: Montgomery made the first manned, controlled, heavier-than-air flights in San Diego), or balloons, Montgomery, an American aviation pioneer, inventor, and professor at Santa Clara College, demonstrated the principles of practical, controlled aerodynamics. Now, you have the chance to weigh in on the controversy. Join us as author, Gary Fogel, shares with us the fascinating story of the man who was flying about the skies of Southern California, while the Wright Brothers were still learning how to ride bicycles. In 1905, Montgomery's pilot Daniel Maloney made several successful flights in Santa Clara using a tandem wing Montgomery glider launched from a hot air balloon. In 1946, Montgomery's life was portrayed in the movie "Gallant Journey" starring Glenn Ford and Janet Blair. The WMoF will also have a perfect reproduction of the remarkable aircraft that this remarkable engineer built and flew. As always, WMOF Members are free; non-members are $5, which also includes access to WMOF museum exhibits. Free parking. BTW, a WMoF membership (wmof.com/newmem.htm) can be yours for as little as $50 annually giving you one-year unlimited FREE admission to the WMoF museum, all the Celebrity Series Lectures, Quarterly Newsletters, access to the research library and access to Special Events.
