James Armstrong Theatre [Torrance Cultural Arts Center] 3330 Civic Center Drive
This celebration showcases 90-year-old survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp, Cantor David S Wisnia. Wisnia’s vocal talent contributed to his survival during the Holocaust as recounted in his recently published memoir: One Voice, Two Lives. Wisnia began singing in synagogue choirs and was the featured child soloist in pre-WWII Poland’s largest synagogue, the Progressive Tlumacki Synagogue. His repertoire includes Yiddish show tunes, and liturgical and popular music. Wisnia’s grandson, singer-songwriter and pianist Avi Wisnia, joins his grandfather onstage. The program features two visiting cantorial soloists, Rivka Iza Foremniak and Menachem Piotr Mirski, for the renewed Progressive Jewish community, Beit Polska in Poland. Cantor Mike Stein, of Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills, is internationally celebrated for his musical talent and energy. Cantor Paul Buch of Temple Beth Israel in Pomona is an outstanding cantorial voice. The vocalists will be supported by an instrumental ensemble from UCLA, under the supervision of Neal Brostoff.
