Chief Herren speaks on recruitment
James Herren joined the Torrance Police Department as a police officer in September of 1974 and served in that capacity until October of 1986. He was promoted to police sergeant in October of that year serving in Patrol, Personnel, and Motors until December 1991. He was then promoted to police lieutenant and served as watch commander until January 1994. In January of 1994, he was promoted to police captain and served as bureau commander for Traffic and Emergency Services, as well as Administration.
He was appointed acting Chief of Police from March 1997 to August 1997 and then appointed to his current position as the Chief of Police on August 19, 1997. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree and has also earned a Master's Degree in Business Management.
He is presently a member of the following professional organizations: the California Peace Officers' Association, the California Background Investigators' Association, the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs' Association where he served as Past President of the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs' Association, and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He attended the F.B.I. National Academy, 175th Session, Quantico, VA and is a graduate of Leadership Torrance.
Chief Herren was born in the South Bay and lives in Torrance.
