With the recent increase in the price of gas skyrocketing to just over $4.00 a gallon, cities across the nation are experiencing a trend we haven't seen since the late 70's - gas siphoning. Residents are encouraged to use locking gas caps for their vehicles - if not factory equipped. These can be purchased at a relatively low cost from any automotive supply store. In the first six months of 2008, we have had several of these crimes reported. The majority of these crimes occurred with vehicle parked overnight or for several days. While the majority of these crimes occurred to vehicles owned by businesses, several privately owned vehicles have also been targeted. Nearly all of the gas siphoning crimes we have investigated involved simple home made siphons consisting of a rubber hose.
Aside from using locking gas caps, prevention measures could include parking your vehicles in a garage whenever possible, or making sure there is ample light where your vehicle is parked.
Recent theft cases revealed that the criminals are sharing their gas siphoning tips and techniques on their personal blogs.
If you see any activity that looks suspicious, please do not hesitate to call the Torrance Police Department immediately.
