Trained first responders throughout a community are key to potential positive outcomes of cardiac emergencies. CPR for adults is offered throughout the community from various organizations. The Safer City Initiative members decided to target high school students. Starting in 1996, all ninth grade students must complete CPR training as part of their Health curriculum. Nurses from Little Company of Mary Hospital and on-duty fire fighters from the Torrance Fire Department give the training.
