She loves desserts of any kind, tennis, yoga, and spending time with her family. Her favorite movie is The Big Year because, in her words, "it teaches you everything you wanted to know about birding." She majored in History at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she especially enjoyed medieval history because "it's just like the HBO series,Game of Thrones." Laura took on the leadership role as the Volunteer Program Manager for the City of Torrance because she wanted a position with variety and public contact. As the manager, she feels privileged to meet committed volunteers and to assist the City staff in engaging volunteers in a meaningful way. Laura is inspired by volunteers because each volunteer has a story and their own special reason for volunteering. Also, she loves cats.
Jennifer Hagihara, Volunteer Program Writer
Jennifer Hagihara is the main writer for the Volunteer Program newsletter. Most of the articles in our seasonal newsletter were written by Jennifer, the eyes and ears of the team. She is a Disneyland fan who loves to laugh and tell others the crazy things that's happened in her life. She also loves to visit new places, learn about new cultures and try different foods. She likes to watch movies, sightsee, and play board games with her family and friends. Jennifer also loves a good time sharing a meal with friends, baking, and taking plenty of pictures!
Jennifer attended California State University, Long Beach and studied Journalism with a minor in Anthropology. Jennifer's writing experience includes internships at Beach Cities Health District and the Daily Breeze, where one of her stories appeared on the front page. She has always liked to tell stories to other people and definitely has a talent for writing. Jennifer became the writer for the Volunteer program when her mother found the volunteer opportunity on the City of Torrance volunteer website. Jennifer enjoys working with volunteers because she loves learning how they became volunteers, why they volunteer, and how much they enjoy the City of Torrance. She's encouraged in knowing that her work is being published and that people are reading her articles.
