Volunteer to become an Assistive Technology Trainer


The Torrance Public Library is seeking adult volunteers to assist with new technology being
added to the Katy Geissert Civic Center Library. Volunteers must be 18 years or older, be
comfortable with learning, using, and teaching new technology, be able to work a regular
schedule, and enjoy working with older adults and individuals with disabilities. Training will be
provided on all technology, training methods, and library procedures.

Assistive Technology Trainer

Volunteer will train individuals on library technology including personal computers, use of the
Internet, use of word processing programs, use of databases, magnification devices, printers,
copiers, and other equipment. The Assistive Technology Trainer will help to ensure that people
with sensory or mobility disabilities have equal access to library materials and services. This is a
volunteer position with the Torrance Public Library located at the Katy Geissert Civic Center
Library, 3301 Torrance Blvd., Torrance, California.


  • Patience and good communication skills
  • Ability to teach, instruct, or train
  • Enjoy working with older adults and those with sensory or mobility disabilities
  • Ability to use computer hardware, software, and other technology
  • Experience in use of a personal computer, Internet, office desktop products, etc.
  • Ability to work a regular schedule at the Katy Geissert Civic Center Library


  • Train individuals with disabilities to use adaptive hardware and software, magnification
    devices, and other equipment
  • Help patrons to use library technology and resources such as the online catalog, electronic
    databases, and the Internet.
  • Create simple guides and instructions for self-help use of assistive technology

Training Provided:

  • Orientation to the library including all applicable policy and procedure
  • Training on use of the library's online catalog, web pages, and electronic databases
  • Training on the use of specialized adaptive equipment
